It's Officially Spring!

I have changed purses!
When I first graduated I splurged on two purses; one for spring/summer and one for fall/winter. The had two key criteria: be classically chic to stand the test of time and hold my giant organizer/portfolio.
I purchased the black Coach first.
It was pure coincidence that they both ended up being Coach.
Additionally, this weekend I broke out a new Spring hat! YES!
Do you have any spring traditions?

Princess Preparation

With the Royal Wedding quickly approaching, so many companies are promoting their own wedding preparations. One example is provided by Sears and Kmart. I'm kind of obsessed with their new games on Facebook!
The first you can build your own Tiara to share with your friends, then you get EXTRA Shop Your Way Rewards Member points on 'Princess" fashion for playing!
This is my Tiara!

Additionally, I was extra excited to learn I was TOTALLY a Kate Middleton for my princess personality!
Kate, Princess of England
Just like Kate, your style is classic with a little bit of an adventurous side. You probably prefer well-known brand names rather than up-and-coming designers, and you might even have a thing for over-the-top hats (don't worry, your secret is safe with us). Friends describe you as having a very sweet, girl-next-door look… they might even admire your consistently impeccable taste!

Check them out and let me know which Princess you are!

Derby Party - Hostess Essentials (Part 4- Derby Hats)

A hat can make or break an outfit (as any good British (or Southern) lady will tell you, especially with the Royal Wedding coming up!) This being said, one of the most important Hat Days is Derby Day! (Duh) I recently purchased a new Derby Hat, however before I reveal, I found a few other hats that are just amazing!
This one you can actually buy affordable! I almost got it partly because it's called the 'Scarlet O'Hara Hat"$40 at SunGrubbies
Drum Roll Please.....
I purchased the Vineyard Vines Run for the Roses Grandstand Hat! (If you read my blog on the regular, you know of my love, and slight obsession with VV). The only thing I might potentially change is the sash.... I am just in love with their Mint Julep Sash!
But I think the Roses will match my long rose themed dress I plan to wear. Pictures to come!

Derby Party - Hostess Essentials (Part 3)

As mentioned in Part 2 of the Hostess Essentials, flow of traffic is key to ensuring your guests can enjoy every aspect of your party. This is a subset of that thought.

Your Wet Bar, will be one of your most visited destinations (along with your hors derve table). I recently found a great outline of what you need to have available for a basic wet bar, and some party ideas.

- Epicurious is a fabulous website that I've used in the past for recipes, but they have a wonderful article here about how to throw a cocktail party.

- Martha Stewart (of course) has a 'how-to' Set Up and Stock a Bar. This is a step by step shopping list that might get used during my preparations.

- Recently a friend of mine pointed me towards Kegworks to obtain my much sought after Mint Julep glasses. They also sell a complete 'Bartending Kit Bar Tools'.

Additionally, nothing says you're a carrying host like setting out nice linens. Obviously taking the time to place fine linens on your table is always a risk (see accidents per Essentials Part 2), but they add a touch of personality. I found the below Jockey Silks table cloth that looks so fun!
Although, personally I think I'll check out some local fabric store to see about getting a couple yards of affordable fabric to create smaller linens to add that touch of personality, on a budget, that I don't feel bad about because I didn't spend a ton! I'll be sure to take pictures if I actually accomplish this lofty goal with my swamped schedule!

Have tips for me on hosting my Derby Party?
Please let me know!

Derby Party - Hostess Essentials (Part 2)

Clean Sweep: I'll be the first to admit that I'm a self-diagnosed, clean and control freak. It kind of drives my BF nuts, but I have a theory that if you do things as you go, you save time by not having to cut a huge chunk of time to do whatever it is you're putting off. My biggest annoyance is when a 'chef' makes a magnificent meal, but throughout dirties every dish in the kitchen and leaves it all for cleaning after the meal. Had the 'chef' washed dishes as they went or while the meal was cooking, it would've made the whole evening that much more enjoyable because it leaves nothing to worry about afterward.

This being said, I have already pre-warned BF of my intentions. He has generously offered to share his apartment for the festivities as it's 1.) in the city and therefore easier to attend by most of the guests and 2.) allows most guests to enjoy themselves instead of worrying how to get home after a day of imbibing. This being said, BF and I don't have the same standards when it comes to organization, so I plan to 'clean sweep' his place. Contrary to his friends' belief, I will NOT be just 'throwing everything out the windows'.

I believe a clean environment naturally puts everyone (most especially your guests) at ease and thereby making your party more enjoyable. Things to keep in mind:

- Layout of the room: a hostess may need to rearrange the furniture to better effect the flow of traffic. Being aware of your expected number of guests, activities you expect your guests to participate in, and the weather are all important things to note; better safe than sorry (a good example is that BF's apartment isn't the biggest, but he has a large balcony and outdoor patio, so we're hopeful for good weather to host the 20-30 some odd guests we're expecting).

- Food & Drink: Reviewing with the layout of the room, the flow of traffic to and from your refreshments is vital (Especially when Mint Juleps & BBQ are involved). Also making sure you have enough. If you plan to serve hot/warm food, unless you have a plate warmer or a crockpot (like my crockpot BBQ) you may want to bring things out as needed so that your guests enjoy your hard work. Adversely, if you expect to serve items chilled/cold, DON'T FORGET THE ICE. BF doesn't have an ice maker, so ensuring we pick up a couple bags of ice for drinks, coolers, etc is essential!

- Emergency kit, not just for safety: As any good hostess knows, accidents happen. Sometimes it's a nick or a scratch that needs a band aid, but more often then not it's the need for a Tide Pen or carpet cleaner. Fun Fact: Spilt RED wine can be lifted using WHITE wine. Always keep safety pins (for broken straps and tears), a first aide kit, and stain removers handy for your guests (these also make a nice vanity accessory in the restroom along with your decorative 'hand towels' such as the ones I'm drooling over at PartyCity!)

Do you have any suggestions I should share with my friends? Please let me know!

Derby Party - Hostess Essentials (Part 1)

Trays work out great for the seasoned hostess, especially when you have a large guest list.
I love the idea of these acrylic trays that you can order with most any design, size, and monogram (because let's face it, it's hardly preppy without initials)

You can find these sweet Lilly Pulitzer designs HERE!

I had previously blogged about the idea of getting some Derby Plates and napkins (sadly, I have been eying the restroom clothes to add a touch of 'class', haha)
Growing up,  I also learned the importance of having an good Ice Bucket for your wet bar. Let's face it, back in the day, they didn't have very many mini fridges (and if you go way way back no fridge/freezers at all; can you imagine how hard it must have been to be debonair with no ice in your cocktail?!)

Just Madras has a pretty sweet Nantucket style:
And always a chic and classy way to go, Waterford:
I picked this particular design because it happens to be the family's choice.
It's great with the matching glasses
But seeing as how this is set to be a slightly rowdy time, we may just go with some chinette plastics... I'll keep you updated...
Have YOU started planning your Derby Party?

Herb Update!

Last week I took a pic of my herbs, depressed over how they weren't growing:

This was on 4/15/11

AND THEN! Today:
Sadly I don't think the Mint is sprouting :(
